There are different kinds of abuse. Domestic abuse also referred to as domestic violence refers to the intentional, willful violent act against a spouse or partner also referred to as intimate partner violence or IPV.
If you believe you are in a domestic violent relationship, it is important to seek help. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Domestic abuse is not normal behavior. You have the right to be loved, respected and protected. You can contact our office at 919-283-1930 for help on receiving services and referrals.
An order of protection is an order issued by the court that orders a perpetrator of domestic violence to stay away from the victim.
You must first visit your local courthouse and obtain the forms you will need to make the request. Most courthouses have a domestic violence office to assist you with the process. You will fill out a complaint form indicating to the court why you are in need of an order of protection. You will be provided with instructions by the court on the next steps to take. If you live in North Carolina, you can visit How to Get a Protection Order | North Carolina Judicial Branch for more information.
